Black & White is Back!

We are currently seeing a revival of black & white photography.  The trend appears from time to time, but has been absent during the transition to digital photography.  This is probably because photographers have all been working at building their computer skills in colour.

It is now possible to produce fantastic black & white photographs and to print them on paper that has the feel and look of traditional darkroom paper. It's as if we have gone full circle.

Good digital isn't about taking a colour photograph and pressing a button it to produce a black and white. The image needs to be pre-visualised as a black and white to get the contrast right and shot with that end in mind. 

My digital SLR shoots black and white and allowing me check the stunning results on the camera viewing screen.

For architects and interior designers sourcing art to compliment a quality fit-out can be a lot of hard work.

If the fit-out follows an art deco style there is the temptation is to import cheap and cheery art from South East Asia.  Of course the result might look like a discount furniture shop set.

 PHOTOGRAPHY & THE ENVIRONMENT

If there is an upside to the current global warming debate it must be that we are becoming aware that collectively we should  take care of our planet, it is after all the only one we've got. 

The era of digital photography has given the photographic industry a fantastic opportunity to clean up its act.

In the past the chemical processes of photography were mainly based on silver and relied on some nasty chemicals to develop & fix images on film and on paper. Some of us were careful to collect the by-products that contained the nasties and pass them onto people with machines capable of safely processing them. Unfortunately because of ignorance or not caring by some people some nasty chemicals, went down the sink. Heavy metals in our rivers and bays is not a good thing especially if you enjoy seafood or like to occasionally wet a fishing line. For my traditional printing I only use labs that I know are doing the right thing with by products.

Today less film is used and much of the printing is done on wide format inkjet printers. The biggest issue is to drop the used ink cartridges into the recycling bin, so they don't go to landfill. 

On the issue of in house printing, I am happy to not handle & breathe the chemicals of the wet darkroom.  S. M.
